Dennis and Judy Groth bought the estate after the selling of Dennis' company. They loved Cabernet from the Napa Valley area and wanted to immediately create great wine. In 1985 their Cabernet Reserve earned California's first 100 point distinction from Robert Parker.
Michael Weis has been the winemaker at Groth since 1994. He had previously been winemaker in the Oakville area. He says, Two decades ago we had uneven canopies. Today we grow grapes that have richer flavors, darker colors and frankly make better wines. My job is to find the essence of our vineyards and bottle it.
