The estate of Domaine Rion owns 37 acres in 14 different appellations including Nuits-St.-Georges, Chambolle-Musigny and Clos Vougeot. The vineyards are naturally farmed with severe crop thinning in most vintages to insure high-quality grapes. In general, the vines are old, averaging between 25 and 65 years. Winemaker Olivier Rion crafts wines that have intense aromas, wonderful extraction and powerful structure yet maintain an underlying elegance and grace that are benchmarks for their appellations.
The appellation of Nuits-St-Georges lies both sides of the town (of the same name) which straddles the small river Meuzin and encompasses the vineyards of the neighboring village, Prémeaux-Prissey to the south. The Pinot Noir grown here is sturdy and long-lived these are some of the most powerful wines in all of Burgundy. Vineyards which lie within the village of Prémeaux-Prissey have a higher percentage of clay, creating wines that are full-bodied and primary. Vineyards further north, closer to the appellation Vosne-Romanée, are stonier, allowing for finer, more elegant wine.
