Macedonian Wine Country Hits the Jersey Shore!

What I love most about wine is the ability to “travel” somewhere without ever leaving your glass. Simply put, wine offers a sense of place. It’s what the French call “Terroir” and it speaks to geography, weather, climate, soil and anything remaining that may differentiate one piece of land (and ultimately one wine) from another. Needless to say, there’s a lot going on in your glass of wine.

The Republic of Macedonia, located in the central Balkan peninsula in Southeast Europe, is a country rich in heritage with a vibrant cultural landscape, and wine is a vital part of the region's history. Indeed, wines grown in Macedonia's ancient wine region, the Tikves Valley, were consumed by the armies of Alexander the Great as well as by the civilizations of Ancient Rome and Greece.

So why haven't we tried more Macedonian wines here in the US? That’s about to change, thanks to Popova Kula winery owner, Jordan Trajkov. Jordan was a former investment banker studying for his MBA in the United States when he took a trip to Napa Valley. From that moment, Jordan was on a mission to introduce Macedonian wine and terroir to the world!

Here's a quick peek at what you can expect to find locally:

1. Stanushina Rose 2014: one of the most ancient grapes in the world, this dry rose delivers concentrated and fresh aromas of both raspberry and strawberry. 147 cases imported.

2. Chardonnay 2014: notes of pear, peach and quince, this wine does not see any oak, yet delivers a surprisingly textured, full body and naturally buttery finish. 90 cases imported.

3. Sauvignon Blanc 2014: a beautiful dry white wine dominated by tropical fruits and refreshing acidity. Perfect summer sipper. 90 cases imported.

4. Vranec Perfect Choice 2012 is the jewel. Robert Parker recognized Vranec as one of the superb ancient Balkan wines. This wine represents their highest quality grapes. A versatile, full body red wine, with medium tannin, that yields aromas of both red and blue fruit. Paired perfectly with a strip steak. 90 cases imported.

You can experience these wines at Tomato’s Restaurant in Margate City, A Time For Wine in Atlantic City and Passion Vines of Somers Point & Egg Harbor Township. Prices range from $16-$20 retail (or $9/glass) for the whites and $37 for the Vranec. In addition, Jordan has announced a tour to South Jersey in October. Stay tuned for details…
