What’s the deal with canned wine?

What’s the deal with canned wine?

By Annemarie D'Alessandro

If you’ve ever wandered through Passion Vines looking for something interesting to try, you might have stumbled across canned wine. But how does canned wine compare to the traditional bottled wine?

Canned wine packaging is revolutionary as it does away with the traditional heavy glass and cork, instead using an aluminum can that can be cracked open like a can of soda. Like cans of soda, canned wines contain multiple servings – usually around 2 to 3 glasses per can. They are also relatively inexpensive as a single can will only cost you around $4 to $8, keeping the cost per serving relatively low at around $2 per glass. You could easily grab a can to share with a friend or just for yourself without breaking the bank!

The convenience of only needing to buy one can for yourself and the portability of the can makes canned wine a great choice for the summertime. If you’re going to a BYOB summer barbecue, you could easily keep your canned wine cold by placing it in a koozie too! The aluminum can also includes another perk – recyclability. Aluminum cans are more readily recycled than traditional glass wine bottles, making cans the eco-friendlier choice if you’re a wine drinker concerned about the planet!

On the other hand, there are a few downsides of buying canned wine. The design of the can itself takes away from the overall sensory experience. In a traditional wine glass, the wine is able to be exposed to the air and you can smell the wine as you drink it. But in the aluminum can, the wine is mostly sealed off from the world, and the small opening allows the wine to pass directly into your mouth without allowing you to smell it. Smelling your wine actually directly affects the way you taste it, which could mean that canned wine producers may be able to use lower quality wine without any obvious taste differences.

As with all canned goods, there is also the concern about BPA or Bisphenol A. This is a chemical that is used in canned goods that keeps your food and drink from reacting to the aluminum can itself. If you ingest too much of this chemical, it can behave as hormones like estrogen and disrupt your natural hormone production. BPA is a highly regulated chemical though, and all canned wines should adhere to guidelines to keep you safe from any side effects. On a more positive note, there are some canned wine companies that are looking into alternative internal coatings that wouldn’t pose the threat that BPA does!

In terms of selection, there is also much less to choose from when it comes to canned wines. Canning wine only became a thing a few years ago, so many wine companies have not had enough time to expand their horizons yet. So chances are, if you’re looking for a very specific kind of wine in a can it may not exist yet. But if canned wines continue to see success over the next few years, variety is sure to increase in the near future.

It is unclear if added sugars aid in preservation, but some canned wines have been proven to contain more sugars than you would consume in a regular glass of wine. So if you’re trying to watch your sugar consumption, it may be best to steer clear of canned wine and stick with traditional glass bottles.

Overall, canned wines are a great choice for the summer because of their portability and ease. I would highly recommend grabbing a can and giving it a try this summer, but if the cons make you wary then I would suggest waiting a year or two and giving it a go another summer. Canned wines have come a long way in the past few years, and I’m sure the product will see many improvements in the coming years!
