Perhaps no Italian region can offer as diverse of a range of wine styles as the Veneto can provide. The fertile plains and the sloping hillsides allow growers to plant just about anything under the sun. Oceans of Pinot Grigio are produced here, as well as plenty of fruity red Valpolicella wines made from the Corvina grape. However, the low-acid and textured wines of Soave are a terrific Chardonnay alternative (some producers even blend a little Chardonnay with the native Garganega). Valpolicella can be produced “Ripasso” style, which adds more body, or in the high-octane, highly extracted “Amarone” style. Looking for some bubbly? You can’t go wrong with the crowd-pleasing Prosecco, versatile enough to enjoy the straightforward fruitiness on its own, or mixed in cocktails.
