Sancerre is the quintessential white wine for summer. Sancerre is the most recognizable appellation for French Sauvignon Blanc in the Loire Valley. The region’s rolling limestone hills and semi-continental climate deliver richly textured Sauvignon Blanc wines with ripe gooseberry aromas, bracing acidity, and flinty flavors on palate. Sancerre should be fresh and alive on palate with great minerality. Great Sancerre must finish with bright acidity.
This wine checks off all of those boxes @ a really reasonable price point. The cost of Sancerre has gone up as demand for the wines has increased substantially over the last few years. Coupled with the fact that production levels in the 2020 and 2021 vintages were down about 80%, we have seen a dramatic increase in the cost of Sancerre across the board.
Domaine de la Tonnellerie is a wine I have offered for many years, and it always delivers at the price point. Domaine substantiates that all the fruit is “estate” as opposed to purchased fruit, and this is where you will find the best quality. Sancerre is one of the finest areas in the world for producing top quality Sauvignon Blanc.
Domaine de la Tonnellerie is a 13-hectare estate located in Bue, in the Sancerre appellation, in the Loire Valley, France. Bue is famous for its hills, perfect for growing grapes, with great sun exposure and protection from the elements. The soil there is rich in minerality, composed mainly of clay and chalk, as well as small rocks, which give the wines their acclaimed typicality. Hubert Thirot is the 4th generation running the estate, producing classic white Sancerre from the 9 hectares of Sauvignon Blanc the family owns; he also produces a small amount of red wine from Pinot Noir.
