In 1982, after six years of searching for land to serve as both vineyard and family retreat, Sir Peter Michael and Lady Michael purchased 630 acres of volcanic ridges on the western face of Mount St. Helena in Knights Valley. Following Sir Peters "100 by 100" vision 100% family ownership for at least 100 years and drawing inspiration from the great wineries of Burgundy and Bordeaux, the family hired like-minded viticulturists and winemakers to help them create terroir-driven wines that would stand the test of time. Today, with the support of son, Paul, and Paul's wife Emily, the Peter Michael winery still adheres to its original founding principles of mountain vineyards, classical winemaking, and limited production.The estate vineyards rest on steep hillsides ranging in elevation from 1000 to nearly 2000 feet. With 120 acres under vine, the winery is known for single-vineyard and estate grown Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Pinot Noir. Under the direction of winemaker Nicolas Morlet (who joined in Dec 2005), all Peter Michael wines are made using a non-interventionist, neo-classical approach, which relies on traditional, hands-on winemaking methods blended with the best of modern technology. Nicolas grew up working on his family's domaine in Avenay Val d'Or, Champagne and later pursued educational & work opportunities that immersed him in the classical winemaking techniques of Champagne, Burgundy, & Bordeaux. Nicolas' passionate approach to classical winemaking with a sense of innovation is natural to Peter Michael Winerys philosophy. Rich and enveloping in feel, with very caressing waves of mulled plum, warmed cassis and steeped blackberry fruit rolling through, with light sassafras, sweet bay leaf and singed apple wood hints peeking in through the finish. Ends with a subtle echo of menthol at the very end. Best from 2022 through 2038. 2,171 cases made.
